Managing cultural differences
About Lesson

The concept of diversity management encompasses acceptance and respect, recognition and valuing of individual differences. Managing cultural diversity is a very sensitive issue, yet it is highly relevant in the current globalized settings around universities in Europe and beyond. Moreover, diversity is being encouraged by national and international institutions. Protection against discrimination is an important topic. And benefits of diversity are highly recognized.

In a scenario where students and even teachers lack cultural awareness, conflict is bound to arise when there are mismanaged cultural differences. The existence of cultural differences is not the problem. Cultural differences are something to be celebrated. However, when cultural differences are not managed properly, it gives room for ethnocentrism, stereotyping, discrimination, prejudice and even cultural miscommunication. It is basically the feeling among a certain group of students that they have nothing to learn from students from other backgrounds. This is mismanaged cultural difference.
